Boudoir Photography: Why is it still so taboo?
Let's take a look at why people STILL feel the need to give people the stank eye over Boudoir photos.
What is it about Boudoir that gives people that taboo feeling?
We've all seen ads for lingerie on TV or at the mall. We've all seen the people at the beach or the pool. We've seen breasts and butts bare in movies plenty of times. Heck, I'm sure most adults have watched a porn at some point in their lives. But even mentioning boudoir people can grant you a little bit of side eye.
Boudoir is not a new phenomena, women have been depicted in drawings and photographs in some form of lingerie since the late 19th century. Boudoir photography was widely popular in Europe where women would be pictured in their undergarments in a depressing, sulking sort of way while in their bedrooms or sitting rooms. Often depicted as a lady in waiting for her husband or lover to return. As if we have nothing else better to do with our time (Insert eye roll here).
Then during World War ll the government would advertise pinup versions of women to entice young men to fight for their country. Although pinup is a very unique type of photography, it would still fall under the boudoir category. Even the government couldn't help themselves, everyone in media knows that sex sells. And a sexy lady is always going to make heads turn. So why does boudoir photography in the 21st century make people cringe?
Maybe it's because women's sexuality is still suppressed. Maybe it's because some people still believe "it isn't lady like". Or maybe it's because of looming religious views. Whatever the reason, boudoir is always going to be here. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, it's probably only going to get spicier and more freeing from here on out. So, you best take that side eye of yours somewhere else. It's a judgement free zone here baby and we are going to Boudie it up.
